Chapter Fifteen

The day dawned hot, the girls worked in the gardens as gentlemen came calling asking to speak with particular girls they had met the night before. Some left immediately, some had multiple suitors, and a few decided to wait and see.

Damica did not expect to get a suiter, so she was slightly peeved when she was called in. Had she not dressed as awfully as she could and made a point to be as rude and unappealing as possible? Of course, the caller was Charles, still trying to woo her for Appolline. As she entered the room, Two was right there beside her. Damica rolled her eyes and let out an audible sigh just as Two growled.

“Mademoiselle Damica, I am hoping to make an offer for you.”

Charles had bruising around his temple where he must have hit his head during the fight, his eyes were swollen as if he did not have enough sleep or had been crying, and his shoulders were hunched. He did not look well. He looked as if he had been beaten, which perhaps he had been.

“No need, Mother Superior, I reject this suiter.” She then turned to leave just as Charles threw himself at her feet.

“Please, madame, she means to kill me if I do not procure you. Please don’t let me die.”

Damica glanced down at him and shook his hand off her leg, “You wish me to perish instead? The answer is no. The answer will always be no. Go back and tell your mistress that.”

Two lifted his tail straight up and walked past Charles as they left the room. A short while later, she was called back into the office, but when she entered, there was no gentleman to be seen, just the head nun.

“You know, Damica, you really should have taken that man’s offer. A witch such as yourself, who flaunts it with your familiar and everything, should be grateful for any attention. Don’t think I don’t know what went on in that ship.”

Damica thought for a moment before she answered, “I am not just any man or woman’s toy, and I am most certainly not going to go with that man. If, as you say, you know what happened on the ship, then you would not have brought me down here for this. You may call me a witch, it would not be the first time someone has, but there are worse things here than I. Now if you will excuse me, I am going back to my bed for a rest. The heat is not something I am used to. Good day.”

“I am not through with you yet, young lady. You do not dismiss me in my own house. I will see you burned at the stake the way the old country would do it! Oh, I can wait, you will see. Once no one marries you, and you reject all of them, it will not be difficult to convince them that you are a witch. They already think
